Vienna transportation
|
The most pleasant way of discovering the beauties of Vienna is on
foot. Walking around on the cobble stoned streets, enjoying the
architecture, shopping or having a nice cup of coffee in the old center
is a real delight. Remember to bring along some comfortable shoes! |
|
Another very popular option for moving
around in the city is cycling. Vienna’s compact size makes biking
attractive, being able to reach every tourist attraction within 30
minutes. Thanks to the separate bicycle paths along major street, in
parks and by the river cycling is a real joy! You can always rent a
bicycle and the city also provides, free or low-cost, short-term
"City Bike" rentals in various locations.
If you prefer an
easier and faster way of traveling, feel free to use Vienna’s public
transport system which is very efficient. Especially the subway, will
take you anywhere you might want to go in just a few minutes. There are
five U-Bahn (subway) lines. You can purchase your tickets, any kind you
wish, from machines or counters in or near the S-Bahn and U-Bahn and
also in small shops selling newspapers and tobacco ( Trafik). For all
vehicles a single trip ticket costs €1.70 (€0.9 for
children/dogs) a Day card is €5.70, while a three days pass is
€13.60. A Week ticket( Monday to Sunday) covering all means of
transport stands at €14, while a one-month-pass is €49.50.
Stamp
your ticket when you get into a vehicle! Do keep in mind that the tram
system can be a horrifying experience, especially if you do
not speak German, don’t have a good map it is best if you
choose another way of transportation. If you plan on staying for a
couple of days, the best deal is to buy a Vienna Card for
€18.50 , valid for 72 hours of unlimited public transport within
Vienna. The card also provides discounts to many attractions, museums
and shops. Another good deal is the 8 Day Ticket for
€27.20 usable for 8 consecutive days for one person or shared
with others.
Due to the effective public transportation
system, it is advisable if you just leave you car at home. Unless you
want to get stuck in traffic, searching endlessly for a parking spot,
being shouted at or having to stop for every pedestrian as they have
priority in Vienna, it is best if you just take the subway. |
