Antwerp transportation
|
Although in some cities it is advised to get to know it on foot,
walking around from one astonishing place to another, in Antwerp it
will be handier to use the public transport. This city just has too
much to offer, the old center, an African quarter, a Turkish and a
Jewish one among others, plus lots of beautiful park in different
districts that are not worth to be missed due to lack of time. |

The public transportation company De Lijn
has a dense network of bus, tram and pre-metro connections in the city
and wide area around it. You can purchase a 10 fare card for 8 euros at
fixed points in town, or buy them inside buses. One fare means that you
can travels up to an hour within the city center limits. If you are not
the lucky owner of such card, you will be charged more in the bus
(€1.50 per fare).
Also if you want to go beyond the city
center you will have to pay extra for the extra zones traveled. The
central public transportation point is the Franklin Roosevelt plaats
near the central train station. If you are not fond of busses, than
take the trams and pre-metro (underground tram).
Taxies are
always a comfortable option to get from one place to another, but they
are quite expensive. They are waiting for their customers at specific
location, which you can recognize by and orange Taxi sign and the
prices are fixed in the taximeter. In Antwerp it is very common to use
your cell phone when you need a Taxi, so waving your hand will rarely
work, you can better ask a local, or ask in a hotel for the phone
numbers.
Driving in the city can turn out to be easier than in
other big cities of the world, but sometimes it can get chaotic for
foreigners. When you are searching for parking places, mainly you will
find spaces where you have to pay, and the typical price is 2 euros per
hour.
One easy and comfortable way to wander around the city is
by bicycle. The city has many special areas for bikers and bikes can be
rented at several places in town like ligfiets, or Fietsdokter. Keep on
thing in mind though, and that is to lock your bike to a fixed object,
otherwise you might not find it there when you get back. |
