London by travel guide Favio Bolano Astonishing, fascinating and exclusive are some of the words that can be used to describe the capital England, London. Astonishing, fascinating and exclusive are some of the words that can be used to describe the capital England, London. Sited on the River Thames, the city’s metropolitan area gives place for 14 million inhabitants and this is enough for one to realize the volume and the significance of London.

The term ‘London’ means a lot more than just a city in England, it means culture, history, art and architecture, fashion, politics and trade, a different lifestyle, London is a Global capital! In spite of the damages suffered during World War II and the inevitable decline of the British Empire, the city maintained its position on top, drawing people and influences from all around the world becoming a global center of knowledge, culture, government and industry.

Today, the largest city in the United Kingdom and western Europe it is fully packed with excellent pubs, galleries, museums and landmarks. With a great variety of culture and ethnicity, whether interested in ancient history, legends, modern art, music or exquisite nightlife, London has it all. London will be the host of the Summer Olympic Games in 2012, becoming the first city to hold the Olympics three times (first in 1908, later in 1948)!

Inevitable when it comes to cosmopolitan cities are social problems, such as begging, drug abuse, theft (there are some very clever pickpockets running around, so Be Alert if you wish to keep your wallet!)It is not a wise decision to wonder around deserted areas late at night, as gang culture is catching up and one can get in trouble easily, when alone in an empty street! If you do notice a group of people, with strange taste of fashion, try to avoid contact, try to look confident and just walk away!

Watch out with the ATM’s on the street as they might have been tampered! There are several “skimming” devices and if you feel insecure you can better use the ATM’s in banks or shops, they are safer. However the police are pretty efficient and helpful so there is nothing to be worried about, as long as you keep your eyes opened! When it comes to climate in London, unpredictable and sassy are probably the best words to describe it; with cold, gloomy and rainy winters, and pleasant summers!
