Cologne sightseeing

Cologne attractions by Favio Bolano One of the most spectacular and well known landmarks of Cologne is the Kölner Dom. This is certainly the first place you must visit and if you are up for a true adventure, climb all its 509 steps that take you to the top of the Cathedral providing you with a fantastic view.
The Dom is open Monday - Sunday: from 6.00 to 19.30, with free entry; however you will have to pay a small fee for climbing the tower or visiting the treasury, but it is definitely worth it.

If time allows you it is absolutely worth making a tour, visiting the 12 Romanesque Churches. St. Kunibert (with spectacular stained glass windows), St. Severin, St. Maria Lyskirchen, St. Andreas, St. Aposteln, St. Gereon, St. Ursula, St. Pantaleon, St. Maria im Capitol, Groß-St. Martin, St. Georg and St. Cäcilien, are all one of a kind and beautiful in there own special way! Further on, visit the Kölner Synagogue that due to its outstanding architecture will definitely make a good impression on you.

Cologne also has some interesting museums and remarkable galleries, from which the most prominent are the Museum Ludwig, with a spectacular modern art collection, the Museum für Angewandte Kunst, with an exhibition of popular design items. Further on the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, known for its collection of fine are from the medieval times until the 20th century, and  the Römisch-Germanisches Museum, exploring the Roman history in Cologne and its surroundings, as well as the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum für Völkerkunde,  housing a remarkable collection of Amerindian and Australian-Polynesian artifacts are all worthy of your attention.

If you are searching for some time out in nature, to relax and enjoy the summer breeze, Cologne provides the perfect scenery for this. There are two park areas (Grüngürtel) circling the entire city where you can go for a picking, meet your friends, or have a drink in one of the beer gardens. If staying only a few days, the inner Grüngürtel is easier to reach, especially the Volksgarten, Hiroshima-Nagasaki- and Stadtgarten parks are worthy of your time and attention.
