Athens transportation
|
Athens is simply marvelous, with fascinating places where one can go
for a walk, like Acropolis, Apostolou Pavlou Street, Syntagma Square
and Kolonaki. However when it comes to cycling, Athens is certainly not
the city for it as it has no cycling paths whatsoever and driver tend
to be quite aggressive on the road. In general, it is not recommended
for tourists do go biking, except for some small rides around the
Historical center! |

When it comes to public transport in
Athens, one could describe it as efficient, cheap and different. For
only €1 you can purchase and integrated ticket that allows you travel
on any means of transport with unlimited transfers anywhere within the
city (the only exception is the airport line!)for 90 minutes! If you
plane on staying bit longer, you can buy a Day Ticket for €3 or a Week
Pass for only €10. The public transport network has improved
significantly over the years in Athens and the Greeks are very proud of
their Metro system.
Going from station to station, one gets
the feeling as if walking from one museum to another, due to the
exposed artifacts found during the excavations! Note that you are not
allowed to eat and drink on the Athens subway! There are three lines
connecting several points of the city, making it easy to get around.
Remember always to validate your ticket upon entering the station! The
standard metro ticket is €0.80 for trips between all stations and €6
for a one way ticket to the Airport.
Besides the metro, you can
make use of the Athens Suburban Railway which is a new addition to
Athens's public system network, and the Trams( T1,T2,T3), which
have connections with the metro lines and connect the city center with
the southern suburbs. A single ticket will cost you €0.60! Furthermore
the city has a complex network of diesel buses, natural gas buses and
electric trolley for which a standard ticket costs €0.50 and €3.20 to
travel to or from the Airport.
Very common sights in Athens
are the canary yellow cabs reasonably priced, with €1starting fee,
after which the meter ticks up at €0.34/km Rate 1 within the city
limits or €0.64/km Rate 2 which goes for outside the city and after
midnight! There are some legal surcharges for trips to or from the
airport (€3.20), for heavy bags (€0.32).It is not common that you get
tricked, however insist to start the meter and make sure the rate is
appropriate. |
