Budapest transportation
|
Budapest has quite a well built up public transport system that will
help you get where ever you want in a fairly reasonable time.
Orientation in the city is quite easy, as the city structure is very
logical. One can always find an orientation point, for example a
building or a landmark. Probably the best way to find your way back is
following the Danube river (Donau). |
|
The most enjoyable way to discover this
charming city is on foot. One can find many tourist attractions within
easy reach of each other. Keep in mind to wear comfortable walking
shoes, as you might not even notice what long distances you will cover.
However,
Budapest is a large city, so do make use of the public transportation
network. The whole system is very easy to understand and follow, but
rather expensive. Currently there are 3 metro lines running, that cover
a huge part of the city, and what you can not reach with them, you can
access by blue urban busses, red trolleys or yellow trams.
Even
if you stay only for a few days purchasing a travel card is a lot
cheaper than always buying single tickets and not to mention easier to
use. A One-day travel card costs HUF 1550, a Three-day travel card HUF
3400, Fourteen-day pass- remember to take a passport size photo to the
ticket office, costs HUF 5300. If you are planning on staying a month,
get yourself a Thirty-Day Pass!
Mixing traveling with
sightseeing is always possible and if you get Budapest card it will be
a lot easier; (A Two-day card costs HUF 6500, three-day card HUF 7800.)
offering you unlimited transport and many discounts to several museums
and monuments. Note, that it is very important to validate your ticket
and always make sure you have the right ticket, because inspectors are
everywhere and the fines are not small either if you are caught without
a ticket!
Visiting Budapest by car is of course possible, how
ever be prepared for long queues, traffic jams and sometimes you might
not find a free parking spot so soon. Although it is an amazing city,
Budapest is not quite a cyclist paradise. Separate biking paths can be
found in only a few places drivers are not very patient when it comes
to bikers. However, if you wish to rent a bike, it is possible in
several places of the city! |
