Rome transportation

Public transportation in Rome Depending on where you want to go and how fast you want to be there, you can choose from several means of transportation in Rome. For instance, buses, not really famous for keeping a strict schedule,  can take you almost anywhere in the city. Also night buses running on metro and tram lines, are very useful and lot faster than in daylight!
It is wise to purchase a map of the Rome bus system in order to know where to get off! Drivers are helpful, but most of them do not speak English, so unless you know Italian, use the map! Another easy way to travel is by tram, which mainly covers the historical center! Further on,  you can use the two metro lines (Red and Blue) if you want to be on time, as this is the most punctual public transport in Rome.

Keep an eye on your valuables, do not keep you wallet in your pocket, as there are many and very skillful pickpockets on the leash! You can buy several types of tickets, at any Tabaccheria, newspaper kiosks or vending machines and make sure you always have a validated ticket unless you want to pay a considerable fine on the spot! A Transport ticket costs €1 and you can travel with it for a whole hour on as many buses/trams as you can. A "24 Hour" ticket gives you unlimited use of public transportation on the day you purchased your ticket, while a 3 Day ticket for €11 is probably the handiest one!

The real way of discovering Rome is on foot, so when you are in the center just walk around, try to ‘get lost’ in the crowd, try to uncover Rome. Be alert when you have to cross a street as this might turn out to be a real challenge, and also watch out for the mopeds!

Catching a Taxi in Rome can be tricky and expensive. Be sure to use authorized taxis (white vehicles), make sure  the meter is running; be alert so the driver can’t trick you in the end! Taxis can be picked up at their stands, basically in any Piazza. When calling a cab, the meter starts running the minute it was summoned, so by the time the taxi gets to you, the meter might show a significant amount already!
