Venice transportation

Public transportation in Venice Discovering Venice on foot is pure delight, due to the fact that cars are not allowed in the city! Just enjoy every little street, mingle with the crowd, discover the hidden parts of Venice in order to get closer to the true Italian atmosphere!
The city is not so big, so walking from one end to the other will only take you a few hours. Enjoy the fascinating architecture, amazing art and the breathtaking scenery. However, even when wearing comfortable shoes, walking all day can be exhausting, so in order to prevent this make use of the "public transport" in the city. Go on the most romantic ride ever along the canals with a gondola especially before sunset, indeed it is not so cheap but it is a unique experience that is worth it! Keep in mind that you can always bargain the price with the Gondolier!

In order to save some time and energy, you can use one of the many vaporetti (water buses) which are the best way to get around. You can also make use of the water taxies, though if you plan on staying several days in Venice, the vaporetti will surely save you some money.  There are several types of travel cards one can choose, from and they are very useful because a basic fare for one vaporetto trip is €6.00.

Venice Cards are available in two variations: Blue, providing unlimited transport on vaporetti and buses, as well as free use of the AMAV toilets and discounts for several museums, and Orange card which provides free entrance to some museums (same as the Museum Card) besides the use of public transport.

It is a lot more convenient and not to mention cheaper to get yourself a Blue Day Card for €17, 3 Day Card for €34 and a 7 Day Card for €52.There is another option, if you only want to travel and do not need discounts or other free stuff, like a map that comes with the Venice card, you can get a 1 or 3 Day Travel ticket for €12 respectively €25.

Note that neither card includes the Alilaguna water-bus that goes to Marco Polo airport, for that you have to pay extra! Remember that many discounts are available for those under the age of 30 or if purchased online in advance so it is worth to have a look!
