Amsterdam is an
amazing city, certainly when it comes to its historic center, the largest in
Europe, consisting of 90 islands connected by 400 bridges, giving place to
approximately 7000 historic buildings and tourist attractions. |

No matter how much time one can spend in
this remarkable city, one thing is for sure, not on single moment in
Amsterdam will be boring. Some of the things one ‘must see’ are the
medieval wooden buildings located in the oldest part of the city on
Warmoesstraat and Zeedijk. Also check out the Begijnhof, a
late-mediaeval enclosed courtyard with the houses of beguines as well
as some old warehouses that nowadays are used for specific
purposes, like the Admiralty Arsenal, now the Maritime Museum or
the warehouse at Waterlooplein, now an architectural academy of
Amsterdam.
One can find some remarkable churches in Amsterdam,
the oldest dating back to 1306, is the Oude Kerk, followed by the
Nieuwe Kerk, the remarkable chapel of Sint Olofskapel
and the outstanding Neo-Baroque Church of St. Nicholas, opposite the
beautiful Central Station. Do no leave out a visit to the amazing
classicist Portuguese-Israelite Synagogue!
The Hortus Botanicus,
the Rembrandt Park or the Vondelpark are perfect places for relaxation,
enjoying the beauties of nature. Spend your day at the Artis Zoo; the
ticket includes a visit to the Planetarium, the Geological Museum, the
Aquarium and the Zoological Museum. While for something typical the
Molen van Sloten and De Gooyer windmills, located outside the center. After
walking around the Red Light District of Amsterdam, be sure to stop by
for a visit to the Sexmuseum, the most prominent museum for sex art and
sex history in the Netherlands. If you are searching for
some culture, art and fun, purchase the Museumkaart (museum card) that
is valid for a whole year, giving discounts/ free admission to over 400
museums across the Netherlands. Two of the most exquisite museums
concerning art in Amsterdam are the Rijksmuseum, where you can get
close to the masterpieces of artists such as Vermeer, Rembrandt, and
other Dutch masters and the Van Gogh Museum, dedicated to the famous
Dutch painter. Further on, pay a visit to the Anne Frank House,
find out more about diamonds in the Diamond Museum or check out the The
Hash, Marihuana and Hemp Museum. For science lovers there is no better
place than NEMO, a science centre that will take you on a journey of
discovery between fantasy and reality. A great place for kids!
