Stockholm transportation

Public transportation in Stockholm Stockholm has a well built up public transport system (Stockholm’s Lokaltrafik), running a subway, a commuter train, buses, trams, light rail and ferry service, all accessible with an integrated ticket system.
Depending on how much time you want to spend here, it might be a good deal to buy a Stockholm Card, allowing free public transport as well as free entry to 75 museums and attractions around the city, plus free sightseeing by boat among many other discounts.

There are also Day Passes, 3-Day Pass, or Week Passes available, as well as single tickets, with prices varying between 20 SEK (Swedish Krona) and 80 SEK, depending on zones where you want to travel. If you plan on staying a really long time, feel free to purchase a 30-Day Card, for 620 SEK, allowing unlimited rides on all public transport vehicles. The quickest and most efficient ways of getting around the city, is with the Tunnelbanan (metro) with 100 stations or the commuter train, which covers most of the city and its surroundings. What is not reachable by metro is certainly accessible by bus, light rail or ferry. Remember that tickets are the same for all vehicles!

Probably the most attractive option of wondering around the city is cycling. Thanks to the separate cycle paths along major roads, and to considerate drivers, biking is a real treat. In the summer, you can rent a bike on Strandvägen where the ferries dock, or at bike stands located in different parts of the city. Get yourself a key-card (25 SEK for a Day-card and 200 SEK for a season pass) which will allow you to pick up a bike at any stand. Note that you may use a bike for maximum 3 hours before returning it! You can immediately borrow a new one!

If you are in need of a Taxi, keep in mind that they are very expensive, and do stick to the major companies, to avoid being ripped off. It is very wise to ask approximately how much will your trip cost, before getting in! Authorized taxis have yellow license plates! Sometimes it is possible to negotiate a price, but than do not expect a receipt, as the money will go straight to the driver’s pocket. Avoid the unauthorized svarttaxi ("black taxi") especially if you want to travel alone, as these are controlled by organized crime, and it is risky!
